Boombox and cassette tape on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A boombox sits at the centre of the design, with a cassette tape below it and a small bird perched on top. A cable loops down the forearm, and the lettering reads as loose handwritten words above and beside the radio. Black linework and shading are combined with loose red and orange splashes of ink, with the photo taken straight on against a white tiled wall.

Marguerite had the ovens lit by half four, and the boombox on the shelf above the proving drawers was already coughing out the tape she'd left in it the night before. Nobody else in the bakery touched that machine. Her late husband had carried it into every kitchen they ever worked in, and its cable had been wound so many times round the handle it looked like something pulled out of a hedge. She pressed the button with the heel of a floury hand, and a crackling horn section crawled out, warped at the edges like a tin left too long in the oven.

Dawn was still an hour off. The window over the sink showed only the lamp and her own sleep-creased face. When the tape ran out she didn't flip it, but watched the spools turn through the little plastic window while the dough rested under its cloth. Someone had written on the label in biro years ago: Side B, for when the bread goes right. She had never once got it to go right on a Monday.
At twenty to six the back door banged, and Tomas came in from the flats across the road with his hood up and a crate of empty bottles he wanted to leave without fuss. He stopped when a bird began chirping over a guitar line, the old recording coming through all hiss and warmth. "You're still playing that?" he said. "I thought it was broken." She didn't answer. She took the first tray of loaves from the oven, crust blistered gold, and set it on the rack between them.
The tape clicked off with nothing left to play. Tomas stood there a moment longer than he needed to, then reached past her and pressed the button back down. Side B began to play, and neither of them moved toward the door.
