Abstract outlined shapes on an upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A large upper arm is covered in bold black outlined shapes that look like angular, blocky letterforms or abstract panels. One thick section is filled with solid blue ink, while the rest remains unfilled outline, and a small black symbol sits near the shoulder. The photo is taken at an angle on a white bed, with the subject's face and torso cropped out of frame.

Tom Adeyemi drew the outlines in chalk on the sports hall wall the summer before the school closed its doors for good, great blocky shapes that the teachers said were letters and the caretaker said were trouble. He was told to paint over them by the Friday. He did not. Hedda Price, who had mopped that floor for thirty years, said a wall that remembered anything should be left to remember it, so the chalk went under grey emulsion and the lines stayed where they were.

Nineteen years on, the year group came back to the old hall for a reunion with paper plates and a bad disco. Somebody scraped a patch of emulsion away with a palette knife and found the shapes still sharp beneath. Someone else found a tin of blue gloss in the store cupboard, and the argument started. Everyone wanted to fill a piece. Nobody agreed what the word said, so nobody agreed which piece mattered, and by ten o'clock they had sorted themselves into camps like old Year Nine lunchtimes.
Hedda, now in a cardigan by the urn, watched them until the tin was nearly empty. Then she walked over, took the brush from Tom's hand, and filled the one shape she had always said was the middle of the word. It was the only part of the wall that would ever be coloured in, she said, and that was enough to show where the rest was heading.
On the way out, Tom found the small black mark he had scratched into the corner at seventeen, a crow's foot with three lines, still unpainted. He did not touch it. Some things are better left half said.
