State outline with script lettering on chest
Fine line · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A black outlined map of a US state contains the handwritten script words 'four O six', with a line crossed through the final letters. A small red heart sits in the lower right of the outline. The linework is thin and even, with the lettering drawn in a loose, hand-written style and the ink solid on pale skin.

Ada Brink had run the Halvard Crossing exchange since the spring the low bridge washed out, and in that time she had learned that a telephone number was never only digits. Men gave her their numbers the way they gave directions to a dead man's cabin, with landmarks. So when Walt Pruitt leaned on the counter of the feed store one wet Thursday and scribbled four-oh-six on the back of a receipt, she took the paper before he could change his mind.

"Ring the Ostrander place past the Sweetgrass road," he said. "Tell her it's me." Ada asked what she was to say after that. He looked at the stove, the flour sacks, the collie asleep under the stool. "Tell her I've crossed out the last one because the line's been dead since March, and I'm not giving up on it."
She rang that night, pulling cords while the wind leaned on the poles outside. The line hissed, then clicked, and a woman answered on the ninth ring, sharp and tired. Ada gave the message word for word. For a long time there was only the crackle of the wire over the valley, and then a sound that might have been a laugh or might have been something else.
When Walt came in the next morning, Ada slid the receipt back across the counter. Below the numbers, in pencil so faint she had almost missed it, he had drawn the shape of the state and put a small red heart where the county seat would be. He picked it up, folded it twice, and said nothing at all, which was the most Walt Pruitt had ever said to her.
