Heart with plane trail on a wrist
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A grey-shaded heart outline sits on pale skin, with a white looping trail rising from its top right and ending beside a small red aeroplane. The heart uses soft black and grey shading for depth, while the aeroplane is filled in flat red with darker outlines. The tattoo is placed low on the arm and framed in a close, slightly off-centre crop.

Pearl Haddow had flown the Tiger Moth for six summers over Clacton, dragging advertising banners for toffee and lager, and she had never once been asked to write anything in the sky. The letter from the Harwich registry was short. A Mr Ned Coombes wanted a heart drawn across the sky above the pier at four o'clock on Saturday, the wedding hour, and he wanted it to hold still long enough for his bride to see it from the cliff path.

She practised on the Wednesday over the empty marshes, feeding the smoke oil through the tap and easing the stick until the loops came out round. The first heart came out lopsided, like a loaf that had sunk. The second wobbled where the wind off the estuary caught it. On the third she held the turn so long the trail curled back on itself, and she had to dive out of her own handwriting.
On Saturday the wind dropped to nothing, which was what she had prayed for. She climbed past the gulls, cut the throttle at the top of the sweep, and let the white smoke pour out in a long, soft curve, down and round, until the heart closed over the bandstand. At the tip of the last loop she banked hard and drew the trail up and away, ending it in a tiny flight of her own, before she turned for home.
Below, on the cliff path, a woman in a yellow hat had stopped walking. Pearl could not see her face from that height, only the hat lifting as a hand rose to cover a mouth. Ned had got his heart, and Pearl had got the thing she had been trying to write all summer, which was a way of leaving that still looked like arriving.
