Stay alive script between two lines on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a wrist with the words stay alive in black cursive script, set between two thin parallel lines that wrap around the wrist like a bracelet. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on pale skin. The hand is raised against a plain cream wall, with a grey sleeve visible at the bottom of the frame.

Dear Tom,

The Bramley by the gate dropped its leaves a fortnight early, and the bark on the north side has split like old saddle leather. I went out with the secateurs yesterday and cut back to green wood, and what was underneath was still alive, which is the only good news I've had all month. Your grandfather grafted that tree in 1961 from a cutting handed over a hedge in Herefordshire, and it has outlived two fences and one very stubborn heifer. I'm not ready to lose it.
You asked on the phone whether it's worth saving at my age. I thought about that for longer than I'd like to admit. What I decided is that a tree doesn't know how old it is. It only knows whether the sap is still moving, so I've been binding fresh scion wood onto the rootstock beside the gate, wrapping each join in strips of waxed cotton pulled tight and neat, and writing the date on a luggage label in case I forget.
Come up in October if you can. Bring your own knife. I want you to cut the first graft with me, and I want you to pull the tape tight yourself, so that when you come back in ten years you'll know which branch is yours. Keep the label in your coat pocket until then.
Love, Aunt Pen
