The ferryman would not take the goat across until the girl had said her piece, so she stood on the bank with the rope burning her palms and told him the truth. Her brother had gone over the border at dusk with a lantern and no map, and the bridge at Sorna had been lit since noon.

"He will not come back that way," said the ferryman. "Nobody does, once the lamps are out."
Her grandmother had taught her a word for this, the way a person grips a rail on a moving boat. The word was stay. She had said it every morning since the soldiers came to the village, and it had never once made anyone stay. Still she called it now, low, across the black water, and heard it come back off the far shingle like a question nobody wanted to answer.
The ferryman rowed without speaking. On the other side a lantern swung twice, then stopped. When the keel grated on stones, her brother was already walking down to meet her, his coat torn at the shoulder, his face thinner than she remembered. He did not say he would come home. He only looked at the goat and then at her, and she gave him the second word her grandmother had kept for the end of things, which was strong. It did not mean stay. It meant keep being the person who would.
He nodded, and turned, and climbed back up the shingle into the dark. The ferryman pushed off with the goat still tied at the stern and carried it back across without asking her for the fare, and the girl stood on the far side of the river until the lantern was gone from the hill.
