The fleet went out of Skerrow on the morning tide, eleven cobles with their names painted high on the bows, and the women stood on the harbour wall and counted them the way their mothers had. Ada Pell counted twice. Her husband's boat, the Patience, cleared the bar last, and when the wind backed hard into the north-east before noon she watched it lean, then lose itself in the spray.

Her grandmother had a rule for hours like that. Keep your hands busy and your mouth shut. So Ada climbed to the net loft, where the old men sat mending and the chandler's boy was waiting for work, and she showed him a sheet bend on a length of tarred line. He tied it wrong three times. On the fourth he pulled it tight, looked up at her as if she had given him a coin, and asked whether a knot could hold a boat.
The Patience came in at dusk with one oar gone and Matthew Pell at the tiller, grey to the lips. He had lashed himself to the thwart with a sheet bend, and the rope held through the worst of it. Cut into the ash of the tiller with a marlinspike, the letters crooked from the pitching, was one word: Strength. Nobody in Skerrow could say who had cut it, though the chandler's boy went red when the men asked.
Ada never told them she had taught him the knot. The tiller hangs in the net loft still, and the knot is the first thing every child in Skerrow learns to tie, usually wrong, usually three times.
