Strength script with heart on wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the word strength written in a loose, handwritten black script across the wrist, with a small open heart drawn at the end of the final letter. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is a single dark tone against the skin. The tattoo sits centred in the frame against a dark background, with soft lighting on the skin.

Her grandmother had taught her the old trick. You wrote the thing you needed on the inside of your wrist, in your own loose hand, and you did not wash it off until the thing was done. Mab had written strength there the morning her brother went under the ice, and she had kept it through a whole year of scrubbing around it, never letting the letters fade.
Now the river was up again, and it was a woman's voice in the water this time, calling from the steps beneath Tanner's Bridge. Mab tied off at the iron ring, leaned over the wet stone, and saw the lantern shaking on the black surface. She did not look at her own face. She held out her arm over the water and spoke the word she had been saving.
The voice went quiet. Then a cold hand closed round her wrist, light as a moth, and the current loosened its grip on the steps. Mab rowed home at dawn with her arm aching and a small open heart of salt drying on the skin, and she never once rubbed it out.
