Stay strong infinity tattoo on forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black ink infinity symbol on the inner forearm, with the words Stay Strong written in cursive script along the loop and a small outlined heart at the lower left. The linework is thin and even, with the lettering set in solid black and no shading or colour. The bracelets at the top of the frame sit above the tattoo, and the soft focus leaves the background slightly blurred.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit yourself down by the fire, the kettle's on, and never mind the draught from the back door. It's been coming through since before the war. You'll want to hear about Eli Marrow and the rope, because everything in this house comes back to that rope.

Eli worked the tide carts on Saltcombe pier, and every morning before he went down the steps he tied a figure of eight in the mooring line by the back gate. He said it was the sea's own sign, a loop that goes round and never runs out. His mother, Nan Hester, kept this boarding house, and she painted two words on the scullery wall in her looping copperplate so he'd see them when he came in for his tea: STAY STRONG. She said it at every door he went through, and he always said it back, a bit embarrassed, like a boy saying his prayers.

The winter the Ferris bank took the boat, Nan stood at the end of the pier for nine days in her good coat. On the ninth morning the coastguard brought up the mooring line, and the knot was still tied, pulled tight and neat as he'd always made it. Nobody had the heart to cut it. She hung it on the newel post in the hall, and it's there now, grey as driftwood.

So every morning I go past it, and every morning I give it a tug and say what she said to him. You'll find the wall in the scullery still has the words, if you care to look. Mind the step on your way up, love. The stairs have had a lot of people on them, and most of them needed telling.
