Stay gold script on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a forearm with the words stay gold written in a flowing, cursive-style script in black ink. The lettering uses thin, even strokes with little shading, and the tattoo sits on the outer forearm near the elbow. The pale skin, cream sleeve and tan wooden table contrast with the brick wall behind, which is in soft, warm tones.

Dear Maureen, the kettle on the Ferris Street flat has finally given up, so I am writing this at the kitchen table with my elbow propped on the oilcloth the way Dad always sat when he was waiting for the shipping news. You will laugh, but I have been practising my handwriting for the funeral card and it still looks like a fishing net. Mrs Okonedo next door brought round a tin of shortbread and a pot of blackcurrant jam, and she says the Harbour Board has agreed to hold Dad's pension until the paperwork clears, which means I can stop ringing them at six in the morning.

The box you sent came on Tuesday. I opened it at the window, the way he used to open letters, and found his old brass compass and the photograph of the two of us on the groyne at Whitby, squinting like we'd been told off. I know you wanted me to keep the compass for the boy. He's still not talking much, but he traced the needle with one finger yesterday and asked which way was home. I told him it was the way the wind pointed, and that he should stay gold, the way Dad used to say to us on the quay, whatever the weather.
I keep thinking that was his only real instruction. Not be careful, not come back before dark, just that. I didn't understand it when I was twelve. I think I do now. Write soon, and tell Frank his nephew has finally stopped calling the lighthouse a cake.
Love, Joan
