Tiny star tattoos on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised arm and open hand are photographed against a plain white textured wall. Small black star and dot marks are scattered along the inner forearm, drawn with delicate fine linework in black ink. The pale, neutral background and soft lighting keep the focus on the small scale of the marks.

Sit yourself on the flour sack, love, and mind the sill, because the stars are still out and they won't wait for your boots to dry. My Uncle Tobias kept the ovens at Pell Street for forty winters, and every morning before the first tray went in, he stood in the yard and counted them. He said a loaf couldn't rise properly under a sky nobody had counted.

He had a bad memory for names but a good one for stars, so he gave them the names of the trade. The big one over the chimney was Proving, the little cluster by the water butt was Crumb, and there was a dim pair near the gate he called Mr and Mrs Salt, because they never agreed on anything. He kept them in pencil on the back of an old order book so the rain couldn't take them. Each dawn he ticked off the ones still lit, and the ticks got fewer as the bread got better, which he swore was no coincidence.

The winter the mill flooded, the stars went out one by one for a week and he couldn't sleep for it. He reckoned the sky was going bust. On the eighth morning a lad from the flour lorry came round the back, soaked to the knees, asking for a loaf for his little sister. Tobias gave him two and wouldn't take a penny. The lad squinted up at the gate, then at the book, and said, 'You've got Mr and Mrs Salt drawn touching, but they're stood apart up there.' Tobias checked, and the boy was right. He had been drawing them wrong for years.

So now I do the counting. Look, there, the one over the gate is going out. Pass me the peel. When the first tray comes out gold, that's the sky handing its shift over to the bread, and you can tick the lot off however you like.
