Stay Strong script on a wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand resting against a wrist, with the words Stay Strong written across the skin in flowing black script. The lettering varies in weight, with a looping S and a long underline swash beneath the final letters. A dark silver charm bracelet sits just above the tattoo, and the warm, softly lit background shows red nail polish on the fingers.

The Bramleys hung late that year, so Dad kept us in the orchard until September, the ladders knocking against the old trunks while wasps drowsed in the windfalls and the light went honey-coloured over the top field.

Mum's note still lived in the biscuit tin on the dresser at the farmhouse, under the spare keys and a bundle of bus passes nobody had the heart to throw out. It was written on the back of a seed packet in her looping hand, the S of Stay swinging wide, and beneath the last word she had run the pen out in a long tail, as if she could not bear to lift it from the paper. I found it the week after the funeral and carried it out to the orchard in my back pocket, where it went soft with apple juice.

My sister Kit came up the lane at four with her hair tied in a scarf and an argument already loaded. The developers had written again. She wanted to sell the top field and be finished with it. I wanted to pick first. We stood under the Bramley that Grandad planted the year before he married, and neither of us said anything for a long time. We only shook the branch until the fruit came down around our boots in a soft, heavy rain.

When the sun dropped behind the hedge we filled the crates and sat on them, passing one apple back and forth, bruised and sour and perfect. Kit took the note from my pocket, read it twice, and folded it back into its packet. We left it in the tin. We would be back next weekend, she said, to pick the late ones, and I believed her.
