The 14 comes at twenty past and goes at quarter to, and I keep checking it as if it might have changed its mind about you. Stay strong, you wrote on the back of the postcard from Margate, underlined twice, as though I were the one who had been sent off somewhere with a suitcase and a plan. I put it in the drawer with the spare batteries. It is a good drawer for things that might be needed later.

The fabric shop on Pelham Road is closing at the end of the month. I went in yesterday to look at the floral cottons, the faded roses we used to argue over, and the woman behind the counter gave me a remnant for nothing, a metre of pink and cream with a torn corner. I have pinned it over the window in the back room where the light comes through in the afternoons. It does not look like much. It looks exactly like something you would pick out and then make me keep.
