Black script tattoo reading Stay Strong with a small heart at the base, on a wrist beside gold bracelets.

Stay Strong script on a wrist

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a wrist with the words Stay Strong written in a flowing black script, with the S of Stay looping into the word Strong and a small heart drawn below. The linework is smooth and even, in solid black ink with no shading, and the ink reads as a clean, slightly soft outline against the skin. Gold bracelets and a gold bar bracelet with a tiny heart sit beside the tattoo, set against a pale floral fabric background.

Dear Nell,

The lift in Hartley House has been out since Tuesday, so I have been counting stairs instead of writing. Fourteen floors, one hundred and twelve steps if you count the landing where Mr Okafor keeps his bicycle, which I do, because it gives my knees something to complain about. The man from the council came on Thursday, looked at the doors, looked at me, and said they'd have it sorted by the weekend. That was three weekends ago.

Your father would have had something to say about it. He'd have written to the paper, then gone down to the depot in his good coat and frightened the poor lad into a repair. I haven't his temper, but I have his stubbornness, so I've been carrying the shopping up myself and telling everyone who asks that I'm fine.

Your card came on Saturday, the one with the lighthouse. You wrote on the back, in that big loopy hand you got from me, "Stay strong, Mum, I mean it." I laughed out loud on the landing, which startled Mr Okafor's bicycle. You always did sign off like a sergeant with a soft spot.

I did the thing you'd have hated and tried the lift again this morning, just in case. It groaned, thought about it, then opened with a cheerful ping as if nothing had ever been wrong. I stood there with my bag of potatoes feeling quite foolish. So I took the stairs anyway, one at a time, and I'll tell you the truth, the view from the seventh landing is worth the climb.

Love, Mum
