Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A black script lettering tattoo reads Stay Strong, with a shaded feather extending from the end of the word along the collarbone area. The linework is smooth and the lettering uses bold strokes with fine tails, while the feather is rendered in grey shading. The photograph is taken close up in warm, soft light, with the skin tone and tattoo sharply in focus against a dark background at the top left.

By the third wet week of October the Dunmore Travelling Circus had sold everything it could lift. The elephant went to a farm near Carlisle, the calliope went to a man who wanted it for his hall, and the red canvas was cut into tarpaulins for a flooded allotment. Only the trapeze was left, and Nell Garrow would not let anyone touch it.

The ringmaster, Albert Pyle, came to the wagon with the bill. He said the ground was soft, the rigging was rotten, and a girl with one good arm and a bad knee could not fly alone. Nell asked him what he thought flying was for. He had no answer, so he counted out coins for the feed, set the lamp on the step, and went back down the lane.

She climbed the rope that night with a grey heron feather tucked in her collar, the one the old man had given her for luck when she was nine. The wind came off the moor and the tent poles groaned like cattle. She let go at the top and held the bar with nothing but her hands, and the ground rushed up and then did not. Her catch was late. Her wrists burned. She hung there until the wind dropped.

In the morning the village children came up the lane because they had heard there was a show. Nell was on the wire in her shawl, drinking tea from a tin cup, and she waved them to sit on the hay bales. Pyle counted them in at the gate and found he had enough to pay for the feed after all. The feather was still in her collar, and she never took it out.
