Carry on script tattoo on the chest

Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph of the upper chest showing the words Carry on in black cursive script. The lettering uses smooth, even strokes with a slight slant, and the ink looks solid and dark against the skin. Two hands hold the neckline of a light grey hooded top open, framing the tattoo in the centre of the image.

Dad never made speeches. When the lasts pinched or a customer walked off with a heel half-stitched, he'd wipe his hands on his apron, pick up the awl and mutter it under his breath. Carry on. He wrote it every Monday in that loopy script that leaned forward as if it had somewhere better to be, and then he'd rub the rest of the slate clean and start the week.

You're off on Sunday, and I know you'll want to tell me the course is too hard, or the flat smells of damp, or that the lads next door play music until three. Tell me all of it. Write it down the way he would, in full sentences with the corners turned up. Just don't stop writing.

I rubbed the slate clean on Thursday for the first time. Then I stood there with the damp cloth and couldn't finish the job, so I wrote the words again, same slant, and left the rest of the board empty for you to fill. Carry on, love. Mum.
