Stay true script, cannabis leaf and goat skull

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a torso in underwear shows the words Stay true in script across the lower abdomen, with a cannabis leaf to the right. A rose and a horned goat skull with a pentagram sit on the thigh. The work is black and grey with bold outlines and soft tonal fills, and the crop keeps the tattoos at the centre of the frame.

The jack slipped for the third time, and Mags Doherty sat down hard on the cracked tarmac of the Sandpit Road, forty miles from any town she would call a town. Her brother Tully had gone on ahead in the van with the spare keys, promising to come back, which was a promise he had been making since they were nine. A goat came out of the heat shimmer, bone-white at the horns, and stood looking at her as if she owed it money.

"You're not mine," she told it. It belonged to Ezra Kell, who ran a roadhouse with a hand-painted sign that read STAY TRUE, NO CREDIT, NO PRAYERS. Ezra came along the verge twenty minutes later with a jerrycan and a grin missing one tooth. He did not look at the tyre. He looked at the goat, which he called Deacon, and said the road had a habit of keeping what it was given.

Mags asked him what he meant. Ezra pointed with his chin at a rusted cross of wheel rims by the ditch, each one wrapped in a leaf-shaped scrap of cloth bleached pale by the sun. Every driver who had crossed the Sandpit Road and not come back, he said, had left something for the next one. Tully's van had come through three weeks ago. She had not known he was out here at all.

She knelt, fitted the spare, and when the wheel bit she found a grey-green cloth knotted to the hub with a single leaf stitched on it in thread the same colour as her brother's old jacket. She kept it. The goat watched her drive away, and far ahead the van's brake lights blinked once, the way Tully always did when he meant to wait.
