Cannabis leaf tattoo on upper thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A single cannabis leaf with seven pointed leaflets is tattooed on the outer upper thigh. The design is drawn in thin outlines with light grey shading that gives the leaflets some depth. The black and white photograph is framed close on the hip and thigh, with the leaf placed to the left of centre.

Dear Tom, the hemp came up through the shingle again this spring, the way it does every year below the south wall where nobody sows it. Mr Pascoe says the wind carried the seed up from the old rope works at Harbour End, and I believe him, because he never lies about weather or pipe tobacco. I have cut three bundles and hung them on the drying rail in the store, seven leaves to a stem, each one pinned out like a hand spread flat on a table.

The keeper's wife at Carrick Head taught me to strip the fibre in the cold months, when the lamp needs trimming and there is nothing else to do with my hands. You soak it, you beat it, you comb it until it runs through the fingers like pale thread. The sails of the Mary Ellen were patched with it for forty years, and her mainsail still hangs in the chapel at Orme, though nobody goes in to look at it now.
Yesterday the relief boat brought word that the Trinity House men mean to automate the light by autumn. Mr Pascoe says we will be pensioned off and the lamp will turn itself. I went down to the south wall before the evening tide and found one plant that had forced its way up through the cracked step where the old bell used to stand, taller than my knee, its leaves dark against the grey stone.
I did not pick it. I have sat here with the pen for an hour trying to work out why, and the only answer I have is that someone should be able to see it after the light has gone. Come back before the boat stops running, Tom. Bring your sister's cloth bag and a sharp knife. We will take the seed with us and sow it somewhere the lamp cannot reach.
