Her cousin Gareth had brought the rumour up from Carmarthen with the wedding flowers. The bride's father, he said, had grown a row of something behind his greenhouse for thirty years and never once been caught, because he grew it the way other men knit, quietly, in the dark between the beans and the leeks. She took the packet to the greenhouse at dusk. The glass was fogged and the air smelt sharp and green, like crushed stalks after rain. Half a dozen plants stood in a row under the lamp, their leaves spread wide, each one outlined in a fine dotted line of shadow, as though someone had gone over the veins with a needle. At the end of the bench lay a folded note in the same biro. Keep one for the girl who asks, it said. Plant the rest on the day.
