Steampunk mask and banner flash sheet

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A pen and ink flash sheet with several tattoo designs on textured paper: a steampunk gas mask wearing a top hat above a banner reading Legacy, a mechanical object with a Photo Factory banner, and a Union banner over a compass rose with an axe. The linework is dense and detailed, using hatching and stippling for shading. The drawings are arranged across the sheet with pencil construction lines and drafting compasses and pens visible in the scene.

The wind off Hollin Pass has already taken your hat twice, so you have stopped chasing it. The compass is warm in your palm. Its needle has not settled since the lower switchbacks, and the brass case ticks like something alive. Behind you the Union men are hauling the last cart up the scree, shouting the way men do when they are frightened and will not admit it.

The gas in the valley has been rising for three days, yellow and sweet, and the masks issued at Crowhurst smell of rubber and old breath. You count the rivets on the banner plate at your chest: thirty-one, the same number as the drawings Mrs Aldous pinned above the forge. Thirty-one promises the Legacy Company made about the river never going bad. You have read the plans. The valve was never meant to be opened from below.

At the summit the compass finally stops, pointing not north but straight down the far slope toward the Photo Factory's pale chimneys. You take the axe from the cart, the one with the union stamp worn smooth by a hundred hands, and you cut the cable where the pressure gauge is strung. Somewhere under the rock a coil of brass springs loosens and sings. The valley breathes out.

Nobody thanks you. Later, at the foot of the pass, Aldous unscrews the compass case and finds a folded slip of paper inside, written in a hand you do not recognise: walk the line you were given, and you will be somewhere. You keep it. The needle still points down the mountain, and for once you agree with it.
