Stern man in a cap breaking through cracked skin
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic portrait of a stern man in a peaked cap with a cross emblem, emerging from cracked, stone-like surface across the upper back. The shading is smooth and grey, with strong highlights and deep shadows that give the figure a three-dimensional look. The figure fills the centre of the composition, and the cracks spread outwards towards the edges.

The block came out of the Dorset quarry in March, grey as wet slate and cracked clean through the middle like a dropped plate. Harrow, the yard foreman, walked round it twice with his hands in his coat pockets and said nobody would ever get a sound face out of that. You said nothing. You had been listening to the stone for three weeks by then, tapping along its seams with a copper mallet, and it had started to answer.

Most days you worked by lamp in the shed at the back of the yard, dust settling on the peak of your cap until it looked like frost. The cracks ran outward from the centre, and you followed them the way a river follows a valley. Each chip revealed another line of brow, a jaw set hard as a cornerstone, a cap badge with a cross cut so fine you could feel it with a fingertip. Harrow came to watch on Fridays. He never said it was good. He just stood with his back to the door while the lamp threw his shadow long across the floor.
By August the face was done except for the eyes, and you kept putting them off. On the last evening you struck away the final flake and found the stone had gone hollow behind the brow, so the man looking up at you seemed to have been there all along, waiting to be let out. You did not chisel the eyes. You left them as the rock had made them, half closed, watching the door.
On Friday Harrow stood in the doorway a long time. Then he took off his cap and set it on the bench beside the chisels, as if the stone had asked him for it.
