The snow had closed the pass for nine days when the carter came stamping into the Crowfoot Inn with a sack of flour under one arm and a boy under the other. The boy would not stop shivering. Hannah Penrose set the kettle to the back of the hearth, took her father's listening tube from the nail by the door, and pressed the cold tin bell to the wool over the child's chest. Its black tubing smelt of camphor and old tallow.

She listened the way her father had taught her, with her eyes shut and her breath held. Under the wool there was a knock, then another, slow and uneven, like a man climbing stairs in the dark. She told Tobias the innkeeper to bank the fire higher and to fetch every blanket in the house, including the one his mother had woven for his wedding. Tobias did not argue. He had seen her father's hands work and knew she had them too.

All night the wind leaned on the shutters. Hannah sat with the boy and counted the beats against the clock, and each time her count fell short she counted again. Near the grey hour the knocking grew firmer and more even, and the boy turned over and asked for bread.

When the sun came up the pass was open, white and glittering to the valley. The carter loaded his cart and paid in eggs and a silver button. Hannah hung the listening tube back on its nail, the bell still cold to the touch, and went to see about the kettle.
