Heart outline and semicolon on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a heart outline sits on the inside of a wrist, with a semicolon placed to its right and partly inside the heart's curve. The linework is thin and even, with the semicolon's dot and comma filled in solid black. The photograph is black and white, with soft focus on the wood-grain background and the skin in the centre of the frame.

The snow had shut the Crow's Foot inn since Tuesday, and Maud Reddaway had nothing to do but the proofs. The publisher's van had dropped a box of galleys at the desk before the lane vanished under drift, and the top one was a memoir by a man who had written, on page two hundred and nine, a sentence that ran eleven lines and stopped nowhere.

She took the red pencil to it with the fire ticking beside her. Most of it could go. The part that mattered was a woman waiting at a Tyne ferry slip, lamp unlit, while the boat came in through fog. He had written: 'She did not leave; the tide did not wait for her to decide.' Maud sat with that semicolon for an hour. Outside, the inn sign knocked against its hook in the wind.

Her brother Tom came down at midnight with his boots in his hand and asked whether she had eaten. She told him she was deciding whether a stop was a kindness or a cage. He laughed, then read over her shoulder and went quiet. 'He's not finished,' Tom said. 'Half a sentence. Leave the lamp in.'

She left the semicolon exactly where it stood. In the margin, beside the ferry woman's lamp, she drew a small heart in pencil, then rubbed out its middle until only the outline was left, because filled in it looked too sweet. In the morning the road was open, the van ground up the hill, and the galleys went back to London with one note: do not finish this sentence for him.
