Stick and poke flash sheet of small doodles

Black and grey · Flash

A photograph of a sheet of paper covered in dozens of small, simple line drawings of tattoo designs, arranged across the page with no clear pattern. The motifs include hearts, eyes, stars, a crescent moon, a planet, a cat, a skull, a mushroom, a pizza slice and several short phrases such as LOVE, SAD and XOXO. A banner reading STICK & POKE runs across the middle of the sheet, and the drawings are in black ink on white paper with no shading.

Priya had nine minutes left of double chemistry and a margin still crowded with unfinished business. She drew a crescent moon, then a cat with a lightning bolt for a tail, because the cat had opinions and the bolt was the only way to express them. Beside it went a small ghost she gave a bad haircut, and a rocket that had been waiting since Tuesday for someone to launch it.

Tomasz leaned across the bench and tapped the skull in the corner. 'That one's mine,' he said. 'You can have the mushroom,' she said, 'if you stop breathing on my pizza.' The pizza was wearing an anchor on its head, which made no sense, which was the point. Tomasz had started calling her doodles a crime scene, so she had drawn him as a tiny cross-eyed diamond to get even.

Mr Shaw collected the worksheets at the bell. He unfolded Priya's page, read LOVE and SAD and XOXO aloud with a perfectly straight face, then turned the sheet over. On the back was a list headed THINGS TO DO BEFORE I'M FAMOUS, and the first item read 'draw Shaw as a planet'. He studied the planet for a long moment, then studied her.

'The ghost needs a better haircut,' he said, and handed the page back.

Priya fixed the ghost. Then she sent the rocket off the edge of the paper, straight through the margin and out into the blank space beyond the lines.
