Celtic knot shamrocks on vines
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows several shamrock leaves filled with interlaced Celtic knotwork, joined by curling vine stems and spirals. A single shamrock sits in the centre and a narrow vertical strip of knotted shamrocks runs along the right edge. It is rendered in fine black outline on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

Brother Fionn has left the lamp burning again, and the oil is nearly gone by the time you reach the carrel. You sit down on the cold bench and pull the vellum towards you. The page is half-done: a psalm in careful black ink, and down the outer margin a vine someone began before the feast and never finished. The stem curls and doubles back on itself, and every few inches a three-lobed leaf opens out like a hand.

You have been told the leaves are for the Trinity, and you have been told the knots are for eternity, that a line which never ends can never be lost. Fionn told you this with his thumb pressed on the page to keep it flat. He said nothing about the spiral at the foot of the vine, which is wrong. It turns the wrong way, and the knot inside the third leaf has been drawn so that its loops cross twice where they should cross once.
You could fix it in the morning. Instead you wet the quill and begin at the spiral, following the loops with the point until your fingers stop shaking. The lamp gutters. Outside, rain comes off the thatch in a steady rope, and somewhere below the hill a dog barks and stops.
By the time the bell rings for lauds the vine runs clean from the top of the page to the bottom, and the leaves close one after another like a fist unclenching. Fionn finds you asleep with your cheek on the desk. He lifts the sheet, looks for a long while, and then, without a word, takes the pen from your hand and signs the corner with a small plain cross.
