Stippled molecule design

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A line drawing of a molecule-like structure, with two connected hexagonal rings sitting over a large circle shaded with fine stippled dots. Thin black lines extend from the circle and end in small filled dots, forming a symmetrical, diagrammatic composition. The drawing uses only black ink on a cream background.

The guard at the crossing turns your notebook over in his hands as if the cover might explain the pages. It is ten past six and the hills behind the barrier have the colour of weak tea. He flips past bus timetables and a list of groceries in your own handwriting, then stops on a drawing you had forgotten you made: a large circle shaded with a thousand fine dots, two six-sided rings lying across it like folded hands.

'Medicine?' he asks. 'A picture of one,' you say. 'Two rings of carbon, sitting on a ball of dust. My father drew it for me when I was nine, on the back of a bakery receipt, and told me anything that holds together so neatly deserves to be looked at properly.' He follows the thin lines running out from the circle, each one ending in a small black dot, like wires cut short on a switchboard. 'And these?' 'The places where it could still join something else,' you say. 'That's the part he never explained.'

He almost smiles. Behind him a lorry idles, its exhaust hanging low in the cold air, and a child in the back seat presses her palm flat against the window. The guard runs his thumb over the stippled shadow and comes away with a faint grey smudge, which he studies for a moment before wiping it on his trousers.

He hands the notebook back, lifts his stamp, and presses it down with a flat, decisive thump. The ink lands squarely over the circle, a neat blue rectangle sitting on the dots, and when you lift the page you see that a few of the stipple marks have been swallowed, so the shadow now has a bright, unshaded patch exactly where the stamp fell.
