Circular geometric line design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A round outline contains several overlapping circles, arcs and straight lines drawn in thin black strokes on a white background. Small open circles sit at the ends of some lines and at the junctions, while larger arcs divide the interior into irregular sections. The composition is balanced and fills the frame evenly, with no shading or colour.

The brass case came up in the trawl net off the Lizard, wrapped in weed, its glass long gone. Mr Penhallow wanted it back over the side as a bad omen, but you had already seen the marks on the lid and could not look away. Circles sat inside circles, a few arcs stopped short of their ends, and straight lines ran from hubs to the rim like spokes that had forgotten their wheel.

You copied them into your ledger in pencil, one by one, the way your father taught you to copy a bearing: no guessing, nothing tidied. By the third night you had a full page. When the bell struck eight, the marks seemed to disagree with it, as though the lid kept a different hour and was waiting for the rest of the ship to catch up.
On the twelfth day out, with the Cornish coast a grey smudge behind you, the swell broke against the bow in a ring of white arcs that matched the lid exactly. You held the case to the light and the scratched lines lined up with the foam. Penhallow saw you staring and laughed, then went quiet when you showed him the page.
That night you sat on the hatch with the case open on your knees and found the last circle, the only one with no line running into it. Its rim was bright where a thumb had worn the brass. You wet the pencil, wrote your own name inside it, small and square, and closed the lid before the watch could ask what you had done.
