Five sea turtles swimming with bubbles
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows five solid black sea turtles arranged in a diagonal line, growing larger from left to right. Each turtle has a shell pattern of outlined scutes and simple flippers, drawn as bold filled shapes with white inner detail. Small clusters of black bubbles, some with white highlights, drift around the turtles on a plain white background.

Dear Marit,

The hatchlings went down to the water at first light, all of them at once, and I have been trying since to write you a sensible account of it. Mr Okafor from the ferry office counted forty-one, though he counted twice and I do not trust him with sums before breakfast. Dimitra's boy carried the crate down to the tideline while the rest of us knelt in the wet sand with our hands kept well clear.
Five of them went out in a line, one behind another, the way they do when the current is kind. The ones at the front were no bigger than a bread roll, and the ones at the back seemed to be working hard to catch up with a shape that wasn't there. Every so often one stopped to blow a bubble, and the bubbles rose and broke over their heads like someone striking names off a list.
I thought of you then, because you always said the sea keeps a tally on us. I suppose it does, but not in the way you meant. It takes the smallest first and gives back whatever is still swimming when the tide turns.
Come home in the spring and bring your reading glasses. I have kept Dimitra's crate under the stairs, and I will show you which of them made it back.
