Daisy-filled globe with North America
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A round globe is outlined in bold black linework on a white background, with the outline of North America filled by clusters of daisy-like flowers with dark centres. Smaller flowers and scattered petals trail along the edges of the globe and out towards the left and right. The drawing uses black ink only, with dense, detailed petal work contrasting against the open white space of the sphere.

Agnes had been told twice that the globe was not hers to mend, so she mended it after dark, by the gas jet that hissed above the back bench at Pryce and Sons on Corn Street. The continents were pasted on already. North America had lifted at its western edge and curled like a dead leaf, and when she pressed it flat again her thumb left a dent of wet glue in the middle of the Great Lakes.

The seed tin had come from Halifax in March, wrapped in a sailor's letter that smelled of tar and gin. Ox-eye, the writer called it, a flower that grew in the ditches and on the cut-over hillsides where the forest had been. He had sent a pinch with every ship since the autumn, because his mother had asked him to, and because Mr Pryce had once told him that a map ought to show what a country was for. Agnes did not know whether that was true. She knew the tin was nearly empty.
She sowed nothing. Instead she took a steel pen and a pot of Indian ink and drew the flowers where the coastline should have been, one petal at a time, each with a dark button of a centre, so the continent rose out of the paper like a field seen from a height. It took until the gas burned low. Around the rim she let a few stray daisies run off the edge of the sphere and out into the empty Pacific, because the sailor had written that some seeds never settled where you meant them to.
When Mr Pryce came in at six he stood over the globe a long time with his hat still on. Then he took the pen from her, dipped it, and added one more flower, small, in the corner of Ohio, and said nothing about the glue.
