The reunion was held in the sports hall of the old Harrow Lane school, because nobody could afford the hotel anymore. Mrs Dunning had the tea urn going by seven, and by half past the caretaker had given up on the chairs. Among the folk came a creature nobody had invited, blue as a winter sky, with one enormous eye and a single ear folded back like a torn page. It sat on the bottom bleacher and dripped colour onto the floor.

Nobody could say where it came from. Old Gerald said it had been in the lost property box since 1987, under a jumper nobody claimed. Pamela, who had once been head girl and never let anybody forget it, marched over to ask it to leave. The creature only blinked, slowly, and where its eyelid passed, the air spattered with red and yellow flecks that drifted down like confetti and settled on people's shoulders.

By nine everyone had a speck of something on them. Men who had spent thirty years in insurance were talking about the time they set fire to the science block. Pamela found a crimson dot on her wrist and, for the first time since leaving Harrow Lane, she laughed until she had to sit down.

When the caretaker finally switched off the lights, the creature was gone, but the floor by the bleachers was streaked with blue, green and orange, and it was never mopped properly. Every reunion since, somebody arrives with a little colour already on them, and nobody asks where it came from.
