Teapot pouring into a teacup on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A teapot with a sketchy black outline pours a stream of rainbow watercolour liquid down into a teacup on a saucer. Inside the teapot body, a cluster of white circles is left unfilled against bright pink, yellow, blue and green washes. The two photographs show the same tattoo on the lower leg from slightly different angles, with a plain light background.

The kettle had boiled dry twice before Old Ida Pell admitted the rainbow was coming out of its spout. She stood at the galley range with her sleeves rolled to the elbow and watched the colours run down the side of the pot like paint off a wet brush, pink first, then yellow, then a blue that bled into the green as if they had quarrelled over the same patch of sea. Nobody aboard the Marrow Gull had seen such a thing, and the cook was not about to explain it to the mate.

Forty days out from Valparaíso the boy Tobin had stopped eating. He sat on the coal hatch with his knees drawn up and his face the colour of ship's biscuit, and the men said he would be over the side by Sunday. Ida filled a cup from the pot, set it on a saucer, and carried it to him through the wind. The stream she poured had a wobble in it, a thin glassy thread of red and violet that splashed a little on the rim. Tobin asked what was in it. She said it was the bits of the world that would not fit in the hold, and he laughed for the first time since Madeira.
The white circles inside the pot were the last of the foam from the first storm, she told him, kept back so the sea would know where to find her. He drank. The tea was only tea, bitter and too strong, the way the men liked it. By evening he was on his feet, sorting cordage with the others, and the saucer stood empty on the hatch, still faintly blue at the edge where the colour had dried.
