A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The seating plan had hung on the corridor wall of the Bramble Lodge hotel for three days before anyone noticed the seventh chair at table nine had no name card. Marjorie Bell found it first, reading glasses pushed into her grey hair, a cup of tea going cold in one hand. She turned to her granddaughter with the look that had once cleared a Sunday school hall and said, "Right. Who is that for?"

Priya had already explained twice in the car park. The chair was for Dennis, her uncle, who had walked out of the family after a row over a fishing boat in 1998 and had not spoken to anyone since except through a solicitor. Priya had posted the invitation to a flat in Margate herself. It came back a fortnight later, unopened, with one line scrawled across the front in biro: not coming. She had still written his name on a card, torn it up, and written it again. Nobody at the table had the heart to ask her to stop.

At half past six, while the caterers clattered trays past the doors, Tomas came padding up the corridor in a clip-on bow tie. He was six and had been carrying a folded sheet of paper all day, and he unfolded it beside the empty chair with great seriousness. It was a Stitch done in blue felt-tip, with a lopsided grin and ears like satellite dishes. Underneath, in letters that wandered off the edge, he had written OHANA. "The film says nobody gets left behind," he told Marjorie. "So he has to sit here."

The double doors swung open at seven. A man in a suit two sizes too generous stood on the threshold, hat in hand, looking as though he might turn round and leave. Marjorie didn't stand. She lifted the teapot, pointed it at the chair with the drawing taped to its back, and said, "You're late, Dennis. Sit down before the soup goes cold."
