The thing came ashore on the spring tide wedged in a fish crate, with a dented tin of peaches and a hole in one ear, and my brother wanted it back in the sea before the gulls had a look at it. It was blue as a bruise and no taller than the bucket by the stairs. When I lifted the lid it bit my thumb, hard, then sat on the step with its ears folded back and waited to see what I would do.

I did what Ma would have done. I fed it bread soaked in milk and wrote its arrival in the keeper's ledger under the wind readings: one visitor, unknown, fond of peaches. It learned the lamp room in a week. It learned to climb the iron ladder faster than Dan, and to sit on the gallery rail in the dark while I wound the clockwork, the beam sweeping out over the black water like a hand looking for someone. Mrs Pryce from the harbour came up the path with a constable and a list of complaints, and I told them the creature was my responsibility now, which was not a lie.

The storm came in October. The Margaret, a coble with four men aboard, lost her engine off the Skerries and the lifeboat could not get near her. I climbed to the gallery with the flare gun and found the creature already there, pressed against the rail, its pink ear flat against its head, one blunt arm pointing at the surf. I fired the flare. It did not need telling where to look.

Afterwards Dan asked why we had kept it. I told him the ledger has no column for leaving people out, so we never learned how.
