Ohana lettering with heart on wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the word OHANA written in joined, hand-drawn style capitals across the inner wrist, with a small outlined heart sitting to the lower right. The linework is dark and fairly bold, with soft grey shading along the edges of the letters that gives them depth. The image is in colour only through the skin tone, with the tattoo in black and grey, and the wrist fills the frame against a plain background.

Dear Morag, the pass shut at four on Tuesday and the Crown at Glenfarrow has become the whole of my world. Nine of us are sleeping in the back room now: two lorry drivers, a honeymoon couple who have stopped pretending to be cheerful, and a boy of about eleven called Iain who has taken over the inn's ancient board game and is losing to himself. Mrs Cairns keeps the range going with peat she says she isn't allowed to sell.

Yesterday the snow reached the sills and the landlord counted us at supper like a shepherd counting ewes. He stopped at the empty chair by the window and said nobody was going to be left out in the cold while there was a roof over our heads. The table went quiet, because that chair belonged to Davy Frew, who had walked out to check the generator and never come back. We found him an hour later in the byre with the cattle, frost in his eyebrows, saying he had only meant to look at the sky.

Last night we played cards by candlelight, and Iain told us a word his gran uses for the people you choose to keep as family. Ohana, he said, and nobody gets left behind or forgotten. He wrote it on the steamed window with one finger, then drew a small heart beside it, and we all pretended not to watch him do it. The heart slid downhill as the glass sweated.

This morning the plough finally came up the road. The word was still there when I left, backwards on the glass from the other side, which is how I'll think of it now when I write to you. Come and see us in the spring, and bring the good tea.
