Family quote script on an arm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a quotation in flowing script that reads Family is where life begins and love never ends, with the words Family and love set in larger, looped lettering. The linework is thin and even, with the ink shaded in soft grey rather than solid black. The lettering runs diagonally across the skin, and the photo is taken under warm indoor light against a dark background.

He prised the lid off with his thumbnail. Inside, under the dried leaves, Father's handwriting ran around the rim in the careful slope he used for birthday cards. The guard read it aloud, slowly, in the English he had picked up from the radio: Family is where life begins, and love never ends. Then he read it again, as if the second time might give it a different meaning.

I told him Father had written it the winter before he got sick, when we were all still arguing about who would keep the house. The guard didn't ask what that meant. He turned the tin over in his hands, the way you would turn a stone you were fond of, and asked whether I was going to see the sea while I was here.

I said I didn't know yet. He pressed the lid shut with both thumbs and handed back my passport, the stamp sitting straight down the middle of the page. Keep the tin, he said, it's heavier than it looks. I'm writing this on the bench by the water tower, where the ink is still drying. Come and find me there, Teo, and bring your own tin. Mila.
