Ada Penrose had been splitting kindling at the edge of Haddon Wood since before the church bell, and by the time the frost lifted off the bracken she had three sheaves stacked against the cottage wall. Her brother Samuel was meant to carry them down to the mill. He had not come back from the mill, and the light was already going yellow over the hedges.

Their father had planted the rambling rose along the fence the year Samuel was born, and it had grown into a tangle that ran over the stile and out into the thorn. Ada knew its habits better than most people's. Where a shoot curled back on itself, it put up a bud. Where a bud was cut, a spiral of new growth came out to take its place, and it kept doing that for as long as someone stood between it and the frost.

She found him at the weir below the wood, sitting on the wet stones with his boots off and a dead heron across his knees. The miller's dog had been at the bird, and Samuel had carried it out of the reeds before anyone could see. "It stood on this same stone every morning," he said. "I couldn't leave it for the crows." Ada did not laugh. She sat beside him on the cold rock, and they waited together while the water ran on.

They buried the heron under the rose at dusk, digging with the sheaf knife because the spade was at the mill. In April a single bud opened where the earth had been turned, pale at the tip and curled like a question. Ada left it alone. The sheaves went down to the mill the next morning, and Samuel carried them all.
