Pocket watch and roses on a calf

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed pocket watch with Roman numerals and visible gears sits at the centre of the design, framed by two shaded roses above and below. The realistic shading uses soft greys, strong contrast on the watch casing and fine detail in the petals. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a wooden floor and a roll of white kitchen paper.

The watch had belonged to the head gardener at Hollin Rise for forty years, and every morning he wound it on the back step before he touched a single bed. Nobody in the house asked why. The roses along the south wall opened when the hands passed six and closed again at dusk, and the cook said you could set bread by them.

When Tobias Greave died in the hard February, his daughter Ada came to the wall with the watch in her apron pocket and no idea how to wind it. She tried at six, and at seven, and the roses hung their heads like tired children. The gardener's boy, Elias, who was nine and thought himself clever, told her the watch was not the thing that mattered. It was the tending. So she knelt in the wet beds and pulled the bindweed from between the stems, one white root at a time, until her knuckles bled.

On the fortieth morning the hands moved on their own. Ada heard the small click of the escapement from inside the case and went pale, but the roses were already unfolding along the wall, deep red at the heart and grey-pink at the rim, every petal laid down as if by a careful hand. The watch ticked on, slow and certain, and she understood it had never been keeping time for the house. It had been keeping the garden.

She hung it back in her father's coat that night. In the morning the coat was on its hook with the watch inside, its face at twelve, and the roses were still open. Elias swore he saw the numerals turn over once, like a page.
