Nobody in Wellbeck had heard of straight edge until Ronnie Pask came back from Nottingham with a crumpled fanzine and a plan to cross his hands. He did it with a biro at the bus shelter, two capital X's on each knuckle, and the driver wouldn't let him on until he'd rubbed them off with spit and his sleeve. I told him he looked like he'd been kissed by a lot of wasps.

The rest of us argued about it all spring. Dougie said it was a daft rule for people who couldn't hold their drink anyway. Lorna said it was the only sensible thing anyone had said since the miners started striking, and she painted SXE across the back of her denim jacket in white correction fluid so the letters stood up like frost. She kept it on through the summer dance at the Co-op hall, when the floor went sticky and the lads from Thornley threw their pints about.
By the last song the fluid had cracked and half the letters had flaked onto the floorboards. Ronnie found Lorna on the hall steps with the jacket across her knees, picking at the S with a fingernail. He sat down beside her and said nothing. Then he took the biro from his top pocket and drew the S back in, wobble and all, until it was bigger than it had ever been.
By the time the bus came the letters were running in the drizzle, blue down her sleeves, and nobody cared much what they said. Ronnie's knuckles were black to the second joint. Lorna held the jacket up to the bus window so the streetlamp came through the lettering, and for one stop the whole word glowed like something we'd all decided to keep.
