Uppercase alphabet in playful hand-drawn script
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the uppercase letters A to Z in a bold, bouncy hand-lettered script, printed twice in two rows of letters each. The strokes are thick black lines with rounded ends and a few loops and swashes, such as the tails on the G, J and Y. The design is black on a plain white background, with no shading, colour or body part visible.

Mrs Pargeter sent back the first proof with a note pinned to it: the L looked tired and the M had lost its bounce. Dilys Rook read it twice, then tipped the tin of enamel onto the bench and swore at the letters in a way her grandfather would have been proud of.

The job was for a fish-and-chip shop called The Bouncing Cod. The sign was meant to carry the whole alphabet across two rows, so that children on the promenade could read their way from A to Z while they waited for their supper. Dilys had drawn every letter fast, with thick rounded strokes that wanted to hop off the board. The G swung a tail down like a dropped scarf. The J had a curl like a wave about to break. She gave the Y a long swoop because it made her laugh.
On the third morning the wind came off the sea and knocked the board off the trestles. Dilys chased it down the lane, one hand on her cap, and when she got back the paint had run into the grain and the letters looked alive, jostling each other like children let out at the bell. Mrs Pargeter came out with her purse, studied the sign for a long while, and said nothing at all about the M.
She paid in coins and asked if the Z could be made to dance. Dilys said it already was.
