Black and grey script tattoo reading Strength and Beauty with looping flourishes across the upper chest, with a partial rose visible at the shoulders.

Strength and Beauty script across the chest

Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of an upper chest and neck, with the words Strength and Beauty written in flowing script across the collarbone. Fine, tapered linework forms the letters, with swirling flourishes running beneath and around the words. Partial rose designs appear at the edges of both shoulders, and the soft, even lighting shows the tattoo clearly against the skin.

The ferryman's boy came back to the mason's shed for the third time that week, carrying the slate under his arm like a wet sail. Old Tam Rennick turned it to the window and sighed. "Too thick at the crossbar," he said. "Strength wants a steady hand, but you've made it look like it's shouting. Go again."

Corran went again. He sat on the harbour wall through the afternoon with a gull quill cut to a point and a pot of ink he had boiled from burnt kelp and rainwater. The boats came in one by one, and each skipper paused to read the slate over his shoulder. They all said the same thing. The words had to match the ones carved above the chapel door, the ones the islanders had put there after the great storm took eleven boats and gave back only nine men. Corran wrote them out again and again, and every time the letters stood up stiff, like fence posts in a gale.

At dusk Tam's widow, Ishbel, came down the path with a lantern. She held the slate close and traced the tail of the S with her thumb. "Your lines are straight because you're frightened of them curling," she said. "Let the flourish go where the water wants it. Beauty is only the part you didn't have to make." She took the quill from him and drew a single curl beneath the words, long and loose, running out toward the edge of the stone like a current under a keel.

In the morning the men hauled a ladder to the chapel door and chiselled the new lettering into the lintel beside the old. The wind came up off the sound that afternoon, hard enough to lift the nets, and the words held. Corran stood at the foot of the ladder with his hands in his pockets and watched the curl beneath them shiver and settle, as if it had always been there.
