Life's too short script on the chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the words "Life's too short" written in a thin, joined script in dark ink across the upper chest near the collarbone. The linework is fine and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The skin is light and the image is cropped tightly around the text, with a black bra strap running down the left edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You nearly miss the train because the note is tucked behind the fare, written in a hand so thin and joined it seems to have been drawn in a single breath. It is twenty to midnight at Shrewsbury on a wet Thursday, the last connection to Crewe has been announced twice over the tannoy, and the back of your day return reads only: Life's too short to wait for the 6:15. Go and get the coffee.

You look up for the woman who wrote it. Under the sodium lamps there is a guard with a whistle, two students asleep against a pillar, and a lad selling carnations from a bucket. Nobody is watching you. The bookstall is shuttered and the rain ticks on the canopy, and you stand there with the ticket going soft between your fingers, thinking about all the mornings you have spent rehearsing the reasons to stay put.

The guard lifts his whistle. You run for the nearest door, and the carriage is almost empty except for a folded umbrella left on the seat opposite and a paperback with a bus ticket marking page twelve. You sit down before you can talk yourself out of it. The train pulls away with a jolt that rattles the window, and the carnations go past, then the car park, then the dark fields.

At Crewe the platform is bright and the rain has stopped. You take the ticket out and turn it over once more, and beneath the note, in the same tight joined hand, someone has added a single line: Then go.
