Strength script on forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph shows the word Strength written in flowing cursive script on the inner forearm, close to the wrist. The letters have a smooth, even line with a slightly heavier stroke on the capital S and the descenders. The background is dark hair and a pale top, and the head is cropped out of the frame.

Dad never let me touch the fine chisel until I could lay out the word on a practice slate without lifting the pencil. Strength, he made me write, over and over, because it was the word the widows asked for most and the one he said nobody ever got right first time.

The stone yard on Hessle Road smelled of wet granite and paraffin in winter. Mrs Oakes came in on a Tuesday with a photograph of her husband's trawler and a list of words to go beneath his name. Most of it was sentiment. Then she tapped the last line and said she wanted it to look like it was leaning into the wind.

I drew it in pencil first, the capital S swinging out like a rope coming free, the descenders dropping long so the letters seemed to hold each other up. Dad leaned over my shoulder and tapped the S with his thick finger. Heavier there, he said. That's where the weight goes. The rest can be light, as long as the top holds.

When the stone went up in the cemetery above the harbour, the rain had cleared and the wind came off the water hard enough to flatten the grass. Mrs Oakes read the line aloud slowly, the way you read something you already know by heart. Then she touched the heavy S with one finger, as if testing it, and said that would do. I kept my eyes on the letters and let her have the last word.
