Script quote across the upper chest
Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black script tattoo reading I am enough the way I am, running across the upper chest near the collarbone. The lines are fine and slightly uneven, with a handwritten feel and no shading, and the lettering sits on a plain skin tone. The face is cropped out of frame, and a grey top is pulled down at the edge of the composition.

The innkeeper's wife has left the ledger open on the bar, and you are the only guest awake to read it. Snow has been coming sideways past the window since teatime, and the road over the moor is shut until the council men dig it out. Nobody else has come down. The fire needs another log, and you are not going to be the one to fetch it.

Instead you turn the pages. Pencil columns of cordwood, gin, a split hinge on the cellar door. Then, in the margin of the last week of February, in handwriting that slopes and then straightens as though it has been scolded, someone has written a single line on its own: I am enough the way I am. There is no name beside it, no sum. It reads like something written down so it would be kept somewhere the damp could not reach.
You picture the hand that wrote it, bent over this same counter on a night much like this one, with a cold pen and a long walk home still ahead. You wonder whether the words were meant for the book or for the writer, and whether the writer ever came back to check that they were still there.
The innkeeper's wife comes through the back door with a log under one arm, sees you reading, and says nothing except that the road opens at six. You take the pencil from the groove in the spine. Beneath the line you write only the date, small and crooked, the way you would sign for a parcel you had been expecting for a long time.
