Striped hat and circular quote on upper back

Lettering · Back · Colour · Photo

A red and white striped top hat with black outlines sits at the centre of a circular quotation on the upper back. The black lettering reads Today You are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You, and the text is set evenly around the hat. Bold red ink dominates, with white and black linework and some light highlights on the hat.

The trolley wheel squeaked on the lino outside bay four, and Ruth Pennock stopped with one hand on the rail, because the light under Tomas's door was still on at ten past three. She knocked with a knuckle. He was sitting up with the battered book open on his knees, the one with the striped hat on the cover, its spine cracked white at the middle.

'Can you read me the bit about the hat?' he said. 'The one that's always true.'

She pulled the plastic chair across and sat. The corridor hummed. Somewhere down by the sluice a monitor chimed twice and went quiet. She found the page without looking, because she had read it to a hundred children on this ward and it had worn a groove in her. 'Today you are you,' she read, 'that is truer than true.'

He mouthed the rest with her, then frowned at the page. 'Who's the youer one, though? Is that even a word?'

'It is if you need it to be,' Ruth said. 'Nobody alive is more you than you. That's the whole trick of it.' He nodded as if that settled a contract, then held out his biro and asked her to hold her hand flat. He drew a thin red stripe across the back of it, wobbling, and capped the pen. 'Now you've got one too,' he said. She went back out past the nurses' station with the stripe still there when the sun came up over the car park, and she didn't wash it off until her shift was done.
