Striped hat and script quote on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A red and white striped hat sits at the left end of a line of black cursive lettering that reads "...there is no one alive who is youer than you". The hat is shaded with red and white stripes and a dark outline, while the script uses clean, even black linework. The close-up photo shows the tattoo running horizontally across the arm against a dark, textured background.

Dear Ruth, The hat came back from the cleaners with a bent brim and a card pinned to it in capitals that said NOT OURS. I hung it on the hook by the back door, since nobody in Thornwick Hollow owns a hat striped red and white like a peppermint that has lost its nerve. The wind off Carrow Wood has been carrying everything loose this month, so I expected it to blow away by Thursday. It has not.

Young Eli Pardoe came into the post office on Friday with a satchel of library books eleven months overdue and asked, very seriously, whether I had seen his hat. I told him I had not. He said it must belong to the man in the wood who writes letters on the trees, the crooked kind that run along the bark, and that the man reads them aloud to the foxes. I asked what the letters said. Eli shrugged and said it was mostly about how a person could be more themselves than anyone else alive, which he thought was a cheek. I gave him a biscuit and forgave the fines, which you will say I shouldn't.
The card had a line of pencil on the back in a round, looping hand, and I suspect the man in the wood is Mr Tennant, who has not worn a hat since the flood. He has never once complained about the scarecrow in his top field, which is wearing a coat of his late brother's and nothing on its head at all.
So I hung the hat on the scarecrow this morning, where the crows can see it from the road. Tell your mother I have not gone soft. The scarecrow looks far better for it, and Eli waves at it every day on his way to school, which is more than he ever did for me.
