Striped tiger tattoo on a lower leg
Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A stylised tiger is outlined in solid black ink, with its body filled by bold, wavy black stripes separated by bands of bare skin. The head faces up the leg and the long tail curls at the bottom, with the linework kept thick and the shapes simplified. The image is black and grey only, shot close up on a lower leg against a dark, glossy background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Nell found her father on his knees behind the tiger booth, a brush clamped between his teeth, glaring at a canvas that had already cost him two days. The beast was meant to crown the front of the Wonderland tent, a striped cat for the crowds to pay a penny to see, but every stripe he drew came out as straight as a fence rail. The animal looked like a tabby that had been ironed.

"Wave them," she said. "Like the Ouse under Ely bridge when the flood's going out." He took the brush from his mouth and said she'd been reading again, which she had, the library book about rivers was a fortnight overdue. But he tried. The stripes bent and swelled over the shoulders, pinched thin across the flank, and then the head rose up the board with its jaw open and its eyes narrowed at the tent roof, as though it had heard its name called from the far side of the field.
The wind came off the fens that night and rattled the poles like bones. Nell lay awake listening, and when she crept out at dawn the banner was down, rolled in the mud, and her father was swearing softly at a tear along the hem. Her hands shook when she unrolled it. The tail had lifted off the canvas in the gale and curled itself round the bottom edge, the stripes running in long slow loops like water over stones.
She tied the loose end down with a length of baling twine. When the horses were led in and the first lorry ground up the lane, the tiger hung above the gate with its tail still curled, and it looked, for the first time that season, as if it had chosen to stay.
