Tiger face tattoo on upper arm

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A tiger's face, with bold black tribal flame shapes forming the outline and fur markings. The eyes and muzzle are shaded in grey and softly blended orange, yellow and red. The design fills the upper arm and is shown head-on against a plain skin background with an indoor setting behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had buried the lane to the top of the gatepost by the third night, and the only light for miles was the lamp I kept burning in the taproom window. Mother used to say a tiger would come down off the hills for warmth if it smelled a hearth, and I laughed at her, the way you laugh at anything your mother has said for thirty years.

On the fourth night the dogs stopped barking. Nothing hushes a dog like that except something bigger than the dog and quieter than the wind. I took the poker from the grate, pulled my shawl tight, and went to the door expecting a drover or a lost priest. What stood in the snow had its face turned to the lamplight, black flames curling up its brow and down its cheeks like the shadow of a fire that wasn't there, and two eyes the colour of the coals I'd just banked.

I should have been afraid. Instead I heard myself say, "You'll catch your death out there," the way Mother said it to every stranger on the road. The tiger blinked slowly. Then it turned and walked back into the white, and where its paws had pressed the drift the snow hissed and sank into little dark hollows.

Next morning those hollows led up the hill in a line, and on the taproom sill sat a single orange ember, still glowing, as if someone had set down a lamp and forgotten it. I keep it in a tin now. Nobody in the village believes me, and I have stopped minding.
