Tiger crawling down the ribs

Realism · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A tiger is shown in a crouching, stalking pose, with its head low and its tail curled up towards the top of the image. The orange coat is built up with black stripes and grey shading that gives the fur and musculature depth. The design follows the curve of the side torso, with the head and forepaws at the lower edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell Tregarth had the lamp wick trimmed and the stair door bolted when the tiger came down the gallery rail, low and unhurried, its tail lifting like a question mark over the iron. The menagerie ship had broken on the Skerry three nights before, and the keeper's boy had sworn every cage was empty by morning. Nell had not sworn anything. She had counted the gulls instead.

She did not run. Her father had taught her that running told a thing what you were. She stood still with the oil can in her hand and watched the animal drop from the rail to the top step, forepaws spread wide, the stripes across its shoulders rippling as though wind were moving under the fur. Its eyes were the colour of the paraffin flame. It stopped, looked past her at the sea, then down the spiral of granite as if it had decided something.

It went down one step at a time, belly close to the stone, head lower than its shoulders, so the whole creature seemed poured down the tower. Nell followed at a distance with the lamp swinging. At the bottom, where the rocks met the surf, it paused on the last step and shook itself, flinging spray from its coat, and the sun broke low through the cloud and lit every orange stripe at once.

The rescue boat came the next morning and found the door open and the stair wet with paw prints that ran down to the tideline and stopped. Nell told them the tiger had swum for the mainland. She did not tell them it had looked back once, the way a cat does when it has left something it means to return for. That winter she kept the lamp trimmed, and every evening she left the bottom door unbolted.
