Stacked letter blocks with skulls on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

Stacked toy building blocks in pink and grey rise up the forearm, each showing a single letter, with small white and pink skulls and crossbones placed around them. Pink hearts and thin swirling lines curve behind the blocks, adding movement. The blocks have grey shading and bold outlines, and the pink ink dominates the composition against a dark background.

The blocks would not stay in order, whatever Mrs Pell did with her glue pot. Each morning the stack in the shop window had toppled in the night, letters face down on the boards as if they had quarrelled, and each morning she built it up again, muttering at the damp.

Her nephew Dennis had carved them from pale sycamore the winter he turned twelve and painted them pink, because pink was all the tin had left after the jumble sale. He put skulls on the sides with a fine brush, small white ones with crossed bones beneath, because he said a toy ought to look as though it had been through something. Mrs Pell called that nonsense, but she never painted over a single one.

The girl from the terrace came in on Saturdays with her pocket money knotted in a hanky. She liked to stack the blocks herself, tongue between her teeth, and she never once asked what they spelled. Mrs Pell noticed the letters shifted when the girl was near. A C became an A, an M turned its back, and the pink hearts along the edges, which Dennis had never painted, grew a little more every week.

On the last Saturday before the shop shut for good, the stack rose clean to the top of the window with no help at all. Mrs Pell stood with her palm flat against the glass and read the word the blocks had settled on, then wrapped the set in brown paper and handed it over without a single word of explanation.
