Stylised cat head line drawing
Mixed · Flash
A stylised cat head in profile, drawn with bold black linework and solid black shapes that form the ears, cheek markings and whiskers. The eye is filled with green and the nose is pink, with the rest of the design in black on a plain white background. The composition is simple and centred, with the head filling most of the frame.

Nell had been up since four, breaking the ice on the water trough, when she saw the cat on the gatepost. It sat perfectly still, as though someone had drawn it there with one heavy stroke of black ink against the grey field. Its ears lay flat, one folded back like a page turned down. The snow had come in sideways overnight and the whole yard looked rubbed out.

Her father had always called the barn cats wild, and this one was no different. It had come down from the hay loft in October with a torn ear and a green-eyed stare that held you until you looked away. Nell named it Tally because it kept count of everything: the mice in the feed sacks, the days to the thaw, the number of times she had tried to coax it indoors. Each morning it sat exactly where it had sat the morning before, watching her with that bright eye while the other stayed half shut against the wind.
On the third day of the blizzard the power went out and the milk cooled in the pail. Nell carried a lantern across to the barn, and there was Tally on the bale nearest the door, whiskers stiff with frost, pink nose lifted towards something new on the air. Beyond the lantern the ground was white and empty. Tally rose, stretched, and walked straight past her towards the lane.
Nell followed through the drifts until the cat stopped beside the fallen ash, where a ewe lay half buried and steaming, a single lamb pressed against her side. Tally sat down beside them as if on duty. Nell knelt, rubbed the lamb with a sack, and when the first grey light came over the ridge the cat was still there, its green eye fixed on the newborn, keeping count.
